They can help with dust allergies, mould and remove toxins from your home

Particular indoor plants have cleansing properties that can remove harmful toxins from the air that are known to cause asthma and other respiratory issues. Others can actually remove the dust in the air and act like a natural filter. 

This is backed by science with the theory first proven by a NASA study in 1989. The research determined “that houseplants clean the air we breathe by absorbing carbon dioxide and releasing oxygen into the air.” 

They also discovered that household plants can help remove chemicals and reduce “sick building syndrome” caused by harmful chemicals found in the home such as benzene and formaldehyde.

Ivy
Can absorb the toxin formaldehyde (a known carcinogenic) found in many household items from varnished wooden furniture to textiles. English ivy in particular has been shown to reduce airborne mould by up to 78 per cent.

Pothos (also known as Devil’s Ivy)
Its shiny foliage easily traps dust and purifies the air from known toxins.

Peace Lily
This plant purifies the air and absorbs mould spores plus acetone vapours through its  foliage. 

 

 

 

They can boost your mood and mental health 

Your good feeling doesn’t disappear after purchasing your new plant! Indoor plants have been proven to boost your mood and mental health. 

The Sydney University of Technology did a study on occupants’ moods when around indoor plants in their homes. It found that “plants brought a 37 per cent reduction in tension and anxiety, a 58 per cent reduction in depression and a 44 per cent reduction in anger and hostility.”

They also provide positive feelings of confidence and joy as you’re responsible for the plant’s well-being and keeping it alive. 

 

 

They can help you sleep 

To catch the best Zzz’s every night, it’s recommended to have plants in your room such as snake plants, orchids or aloe vera. They work by purifying the air and giving you a sweet smell to help you sleep. 

It’s also worth noting that a study showed that caring for indoor plants can reduce blood pressure and help you feel soothed, making it the perfect activity to encourage a good night’s sleep.
